Nautilus depicts several watery landscapes inspired by the imagery of the ocean and the spirals of the chambered nautilus. Movement one moves as the ebb and flow of the tide, growing in intensity before dissipating. A coral reef teeming with life is the inspiration for the second movement; the bass clarinet provides the main thematic material and "bubble music" accompanies each subsequent variation. A ghost ship moving at dizzying speed across the water closes the work with a clanging of bells and rigging.
